Passive House Japan: Okinawa’s First Passive House Launch & Networking Event
We were deeply honored to be invited to the presentation and exchange event for Okinawa’s first Passive House, organized by Passive House Japan. This project was commissioned by a talented young couple and completed in collaboration with local architect Tatsumi Sakugawa and Passive House consultant Mrs. Etoh, ultimately achieving PHJ certification.
Okinawa features a subtropical island climate, similar to northern Taiwan — hot and humid — which posed significant challenges for the project. Unlike the region’s common concrete construction, this project revived the long-unused timber construction system and demonstrated impressive performance. Personally, I greatly admire this style: the warm tones combined with Okinawan architectural details, seamlessly integrated with professional Passive House technology, create a truly remarkable building.
As the highest standard for net-zero carbon emissions, Passive House design and construction offer many valuable lessons. We can draw insights from this project and explore how to apply these principles in Taiwan’s climate to promote more sustainable building practices.
