PHPP (Passive House Planning Package) is the industry-standard design and energy modelling tool used by architects and energy consultants to plan Passivhaus and high-performance low-energy buildings. Backed by decades of development, validation, and real-world performance monitoring, PHPP is recognized for its reliability and precision in predicting building energy performance.

PHPP: System requirements and license type

PHPP is delivered as a Microsoft Excel–based workbook in XLSX/XLSM format. The software requires Microsoft Windows XP or later with Microsoft Excel 2007 or later. On macOS, PHPP is compatible with Excel for Mac 2011 or later. According to the Passive House Institute (PHI), PHPP may also be operated using current versions of OpenOffice or LibreOffice; however, functionality may be limited depending on the platform, particularly with respect to calculation features and embedded macros.

PHPP is licensed on a single-user basis and includes a comprehensive flipbook-style user manual. Upon purchase, users receive a unique registration code to activate their PHPP license. Registered users are eligible to receive calculation tool updates, as well as upgrade discounts for future versions of PHPP or DesignPH.

designPH: 3D data entry tool for the PHPP

designPH is a plug-in for the widely used 3D modelling software SketchUp. It allows users to model a project directly in SketchUp—or import geometry from other CAD platforms—to create a detailed three-dimensional representation of the building envelope.

Passivhaus-certified components, such as windows, are available directly within designPH as native SketchUp components. The plug-in performs automated analysis and simplified calculations of heating demand, with results displayed in a dedicated Passivhaus performance dashboard within SketchUp.

designPH enables real-time 3D editing and optimisation of the building design while continuously tracking energy performance. The building envelope geometry, including window and shading data, can be seamlessly exported to PHPP for detailed energy modelling and verification.
